Lately my husband wonders if I’m as smart as he’s always thought, because I’ve been watching “Pawn Stars,” a History Channel reality show. Not just the new episodes. One. After. Another.
I say, who knew there were so many weird collectables and so many rich collectors? Furthermore, it’s pretty cute how Rick Harrison giggles when he thinks he’s said something funny. And I have to like old people who pretend to work, like the dull-eyed Old Man who says he’s the one in charge of the shop.
I like to imagine how the TV production staff might work with people who bring odd items to the shop to sell, whether they film those people the day they come in or wait for research and scripting.
I wonder how much the director rehearses the Old Man’s digs at everyone. (“Okay, Old Man, now give some &*#@ to Chumlee.”) Are the items’ histories printed on a teleprompter? I’m pretty sure the Old Man reads his.
“Pawn Stars” has no laugh track, no booming synthesizer, and few commercials. It’s a great choice for bedtime, slow enough to lull me to sleep.
So there it is, my number ten confession, and I’m highly relieved to get this one off my chest. Maybe a “Pawn Stars” producer will comment. Or one of the stars–that’d show my husband! Rick, are you listening?
Watch for upcoming revelations. In the meantime, ‘fess up. What lame show has you hooked?
You think you’re bad – I’m hooked on it, American Pickers AND Storage Wars (even though the latter is definitely set up). How sad is that?!

You know aht? I love this show. Good people, good values, and an interesting dip into history from a unique perspective. Here’s a little bit of “me” trivia: my wife’s ex-boss is cousins with these guys 🙂 Small world.

I’m hooked on the bridal shows on TLC – “Friday is Bride Day”. I think it has something to do with the fact I never had a real wedding gown and the ones on the bridal shows are so very extravagant. I can’t help wondering if it makes their marriage last longer. But, I don’t dare tune them in when my husband is around.

I’ve never heard of Pawn Stars…did watch Duck Dynasty once and hated it. But I do get a kick out of Real Housewives of New Jersey…wouldn’t want to be friends with any of them…maybe that’s the appeal…
I know what you mean, Patti. The whole pawn shop thing is fascinating because to me, it’s different. And the guys are all right.
I think I prefer the Pickers to the Pawn Stars, but I guess we are like a lot of others in realizing we watch more of these shows than “regular” TV. We watch some of the shows looking for new places to live, but I swear those buyers would take one look at my white appliances and scream- OK, so it is the original 1966 kitchen with newer appliances.
