Book club experiences:
Do you belong to a book club? A few years ago, I belonged to three that met on the island where I lived. Our Zoom sessions grew from one of these clubs during the Covid pandemic, when we didn't think it was safe to meet in person. When the pandemic ended, we realized we preferred virtual meetings because many of the members lived on the island only in winter, and one or two lived most of the year out of the country. Today we meet 10 months a year, always online, though this year we did have one lovely in-person social gathering.

Book clubs are great for people who love to read and share their thoughts through discussion. The clubs are also a great way to find books we might not otherwise know about. Recently our book club selection was Timothy Egan's A Fever in the Heartland, a book I probably would not have read otherwise. I'm very glad I did.
If you're interested in starting a virtual book club, Zoom has a free "basic" plan for 40 minutes and a paid plan that's about $14 per month. I understand that "Google Meets" now offers free video conferencing for anyone with a Google email.
To start a book club, talk about it with your book-loving family, friends, and others. You could include people you knew in high school or college, friends who've moved away, family you seldom see, and new people recommended by someone else. The staff of your public library may also have suggestions for an in-person book club.
In your first meeting, set some guidelines...like how the books will be chosen, who will lead the discussion, and whether or not controversial topics will be permitted.
We've discovered that to give everyone an opportunity to speak in a couple of hours time, limiting a Zoom group to 12 or 16 is a good idea. Also, it's all right if everyone isn't able to read the book or attend the session.

I didn't know most of my book clubbers when I joined, but now they feel like friends. I think this is true of book club membership whether you meet virtually or in person. What a wonderful added benefit!
