The stories follow a group of women who live in a fictional West Virginia sawmill town that later becomes a coal town. Many readers, including those from Kentucky, tell me how much the stories remind them of towns where they grew up and a culture they heard about from parents and grandparents. The stories are realistic without graphic violence and sex, and have only occasional, moderate profanity.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This enjoyable series, skillfully crafted by Author Carol Ervin, has lots going for it, one of which is that in each book, she works in little tidbits of life wisdom — observations by a character or, more often, by the narrator. I notice that many times, those sections have been highlighted often. They’re part of the moral tone of the series, in which the best, most likeable characters are those who try hard to do good, often finding ways to use words and deeds instead of hate and violence to alter the course of events.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Most series bore me after two volumes at most. This series is fabulous. From the first to the last. Ervin is a talented and creative writer. You will not regret reading this series. Beware, it's addictive!!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The way that this series has touched my soul is just indescribable. I've lived my whole life in rural Appalachia and can so easily see my family in the characters. This is my second time reading this series and these books will stay with me for a lifetime. Carol Ervin brings to life the feelings of passion, desire, longing, hope, and sheer will to survive, that I find unmatched in other fiction novels I've read. I can truly *feel* what the characters are feeling. I'm there with them every step of the way. I have never cared for fiction novels. I prefer true crime and memoirs. But she is able to draw me in and keep me turning the pages, staying up all night because I can't bear to put it down. Well done Mrs Ervin. And thank you.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I've lived in rural Appalachia all my life, with a long line of strong matriarchs. I can easily picture these characters being my family. I can see the hills and the rivers. I can smell the trains. I can feel the absence of the men and the desperation and need of the women to make it on their own. I can feel the untold desires, longing, passion, and hope from every single character. Desire to love. To survive. To revive. I literally cannot put these books down.
